It depends. Theres a lot of variables and with certain vehicles it does seem as though they lead to better fuel mileage and etc. I picked up a couple of miles to the gallon shortly after changing to one, but industry tests shows it is variable.
anyone try them and are they as good as advertised?

my ford ranger gets maybe 1 mpg better and has very very very small power gains through lower RPMs not worth the money for me.
Cant we all just get along?
The K&N is a decent filter just like the other two said it all depends on your vehicle and how it reacts to it. You can two of the exact same vehicle and put the filter in and one might get twice the gains as the other. They will pay for themselves over time. The big problem is around here most people put it in and then think man I got a filter I never need to change and then they don't clean it or only clean it once a year. In this area you need to clean it at least every 3 months to get the full benefit of it. There is so much dust and such in the air that they get choked off faster than you think and then they are limiting performance and mileage. The best performance filter made was a TrueFlow but they didn't have the funding to put into advertising like K&N and went out of business. I have used/sold nearly every brand and the TrueFlow was the absolute best I ever saw and would go 2-3 times longer than the K&N between cleaning without losing functionality.
What kind of vehicle are you working on?

would be for a Ford Explorer and a Suzuki SX4

You would get the most benefit out of the Suzuki, I wouldn't expect much out of the Explorer it's just not there to get.
